What is Break Glass?

Break Glass is an encrypted emergency instruction delivery service. You store instructions, access guides, and contacts — then designate trusted people who can trigger delivery when something happens to you. Your data is encrypted at rest with per-user keys and delivered via email, SMS, or other channels when your plan activates.

How is Break Glass different from a password manager?

Password managers store credentials for your daily use. Break Glass stores emergency instructions that are delivered to other people when something happens to you. It's not about accessing your own accounts — it's about making sure the right people get the right instructions at the right time. We recommend storing instructions for WHERE to find sensitive information, not the information itself.

How does the safety check-in work?

The safety check-in monitors whether you respond to periodic prompts. You set the interval (e.g., every 30 days) and a grace period (e.g., 7 days). If you stop responding, the system sends escalating reminders via email, push, SMS, and voice. If you don't check in before the grace period ends, your designated emergency plan activates automatically. This is optional — you can also rely solely on manual activation by trusted contacts.

What happens when an emergency plan activates?

Your encrypted instructions are decrypted and delivered to the contacts you designated, via the channels you configured (email, SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.). Different contacts can receive different information based on the scenario. For example, your spouse gets financial instructions while your lawyer gets legal documents.

Is my data encrypted?

Yes. Message content is encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM with per-user encryption keys. Contact details (names, emails, phones) are encrypted at the field level. Passwords and PINs are hashed with Argon2id and never stored in plaintext. The server is protected by full-disk encryption with hardware-backed key protection. See our security page for full details.

What should I store in Break Glass?

We recommend storing instructions and references — not raw credentials. For example: "The password manager recovery kit is in the fireproof safe, combination 42-18-36" rather than the passwords themselves. Good things to store include: account access instructions, insurance policy numbers and contact details, medical information and doctor contacts, financial advisor contact info, and instructions for what to do in specific emergencies.

What if someone triggers my plan accidentally?

Every scenario has a configurable cancellation window — from instant to 7 days. When triggered, you're immediately notified via all your configured channels (email, push, SMS, voice). You can cancel with one click from your dashboard. You can also require multiple people to approve before a plan activates (multiple approvals).

What are multiple approvals?

Multiple approvals requires multiple trusted contacts to independently approve before a scenario activates. For example, you can require 2 of 3 trusted contacts to agree. This protects against a single person triggering your plan accidentally, maliciously, or under duress. It's optional — one trusted contact works great for most people.

How much does Break Glass cost?

Break Glass is $2.99 USD per month plus applicable taxes. You get a 30-day free trial with no credit card required — just create an account and start building your plan. Every feature is included, no tiers or upsells.

What happens if I stop paying?

You get a 90-day grace period where everything continues to work — including triggers, safety check-in, and message delivery. This exists because if the reason you stopped paying is that something happened to you, your emergency plan still needs to activate. After 90 days, all services are disabled until you resubscribe.

Can I export my data?

Yes. You can download all your data in JSON format from your account settings — including contacts (decrypted), message content (decrypted), scenarios, settings, and audit log. This is your right under GDPR Article 20 (data portability).

Can I delete my account and all data?

Yes, at any time from your account settings. A 30-day grace period begins during which you can cancel the deletion. After 30 days, all your data is permanently and irreversibly deleted — including contacts, payloads, scenarios, and audit logs. Payment records are retained for 7 years as required by tax law.

What happens if Break Glass goes down?

Your data is backed up automatically. If the service goes offline temporarily, the safety check-in pauses and resumes when it comes back. Your data remains encrypted at rest throughout. We recommend maintaining redundant plans through legal instruments and trusted individuals informed in person.

Do I really need this? I don't have crypto or a company.

You have more than you think. Your phone PIN. Your bank login. Your children's school and doctor contacts. Utility accounts. Insurance policies. If you disappeared tomorrow, could your family keep the household running? Break Glass isn't just for crypto holders and founders — it's for anyone whose family would be lost without their information.

Can Break Glass staff read my information?

Break Glass uses server-side key management, which means the server can derive encryption keys when your plan activates. This is required for the safety check-in and automated delivery to function. We protect this capability with full-disk encryption, hardware-backed key protection, strict access controls, and tamper-detectable audit logging. See our security page for the full architecture.
